Congo Soukous
Congo Soukous
Watch these lovely dancers dance Soukous style. The singer is Dany Engobo, along with Diblo and Sakis. Straddling the Equator, the Democratic Republic of the Congo is the third largest country in Africa (after Sudan and Algeria).
The mighty Congo River flows north and then south through a land rich in minerals, fertile farmlands, and rain forests.
Dance traditions date back thousands of years in this region of the world. Drums have always been an important part of African music, and the dancers move their hip movements to the drum beats. The movements are quite quick and the dance is quite tiring - a great core workout!
This dance and the music is a much more modern version of the regions music. If it sounds similar to Carribean music, that is because much of the island music was influenced by the traditional music of Africa.
