Watch the top 10 plays by these American high school players.

Baseball, as we know it, was invented by Alexander Cartwright.  It was based on the English game of rounders, although some believe other countries had games involving bats and balls that were also similar.

Baseball is a team sport and is played on an outdoor 90 foot baseball diamond with each corner of the diamond holding a base: 1st base, 2nd base, 3rd base and home plate.    There are nine innings to a game, and each inning teams take turns batting and fielding.  The first official game was played on June 19, 1846, in Hoboken, New Jersey.  Baseball became an Olympic sport in 1992.

In North America, the men’s professional league is called Major League Baseball and consists of the American League and the National League.  Every year there is a final championship with 4 teams from each league, called the World Series.  Baseball has been called America’s national sport, but it is also the top sport in Japan and Cuba.

A triple crown in baseball means that a player ends his season coming first in all 3 batting categories: runs batted in, most home runs and highest batting average.  For a pitcher, a triple crown means most strikeouts, wins and earned run average.
