Learn to do the Samba dance step. Julian, our Latin dance instructor, teaches us Samba Dancing. Julian, who won junior Latin dance champion of Canada, takes us through some basic moves used in a Samba dance. The Samba is one of the main dances performed in international dance sport competitions.
The Samba is a Brazilian rhythmical dance. There are three steps to every bar of music so it kind of feels like a waltz type step in 3/4 time. There are many different Samba steps, and there is also Ballroom Samba which differs from the original Brazilian Samba.
The Samba has always been a popular form of dance since it became known outside of Brazil. For instance, Fred Astaire and Ginger Rogers danced a Samba in the movie “Flying Down to Rio”. Carmen Miranda, a famous dancer and actress, did the Samba in her movie “That Night in Rio”.
The Samba is usually done with a hip movement on the half beats between steps. The dancers should keep their torsos flat and their weight forward on the bent standing leg.
