Jive is a ballroom dance style that began in the 1940's. It is a lively Swing dance and is considered one of the five International Latin dances. Most Latin dance competitions that feature the Jive dance steps.
The music that was associated with early jive was known as Ragtime. The jive dances have syncopated rhythms with stress on beats 2 and 4. Ragtime eventually evolved into ‘Swing’ in the 1920s, then new dances like the Foxtrot and Charleston became popular.
The syncopated triple steps in the jive are called "Chasses". Modern jive is side- close- side to the left followed by the same fast syncopated chasses steps to the right, followed by a slower break back and replace forward. The hips move a half beat after each one of the steps.
