Whether you prefer an outdoor rink or an arena where you can skate all year round, there are lots of fun things for kids to do on the ice. Hockey is Canada’s favourite sport. According to the Canadian Hockey Association, there are over 4.5 million Canadians involved in amateur hockey as coaches, officials, players, administrators and volunteers. It is also popular in the U.S. and Europe. Canada has produced many great hockey figures like Mario Lemieux, Bobby Orr, Wayne Gretzky, Maurice Richard, Gordie Howe and Sidney Crosby.
Figure skating is one of the top watched winter Olympic events, with categories like men’s and women’s figure skating, pair skating, etc. Great Canadian figure skaters include Kurt Browning, Brian Orser, Elvis Stojko, Petra Burke and Toller Cranston.
Speed skating has been picking up in popularity and is a great workout and adrenaline rush. Popularity surged after the games at Nagano, where Canadian speed skaters, like Cariona LeMay Doan and Susan Auch, dominated.
