The first 2 person beach volleyball game was played in 1930, and the first tournament was held in 1948.
Two person beach volleyball became an Olympic sport in 1996.
Beach volleyball is played 2 on 2 and is separated into mens and womens catagories. Watch the finals of the 2005 AVP tournament in Colorado – and don’t feel bad if you sometimes trip or miss the ball yourself.
Watch pro player Kerri Walsh trip as she goes to serve the ball. Ooops. That is what keeps sports fresh and exciting – you never know what can happen! The other team (Rachel Wacholder and Elaine Youngs) won the championship.
Beach volleyball can be played at the park, at the local lakefront or oceanfront beach, or even in the backyard!
Playing in the sand is a great workout for leg muscles as they have to work harder to jump compared to a gym floor.
Sand is also an uneven surface, so tripping becomes an issue more so than playing on an indoor surface. Watch the video to see how a trip can happen even among skilled players.
