Basketball was invented in Canada in 1891 by James Naismith, a physical education instructor from Almonte, Ontario. The first games that were played used a peach basket hung 10 feet above the floor and had 13 rules.
Basketball was first played in the Olympic Games in 1936. The first game of the NBA was played in Toronto on November 1, 1946. Before that, teams were part of the Basketball Association of America.
Senda Berenson is credited with organizing the first women’s college basketball game in 1893. She modified Naismith’s rules and published her own guide for women’s basketball in 1899. Women’s basketball only became an official Olympic sport in 1976.
A basketball hall of fame was established in Springfield, Massachusetts in 1959. FIBA dropped the distinction between amateur and professional players in 1989, and in 1992, professional players played for the first time in the Olympic Games.
