Professional soccer players were not allowed to play in the Olympic games until 1980 – over 80 years after soccer became an Olympic sport.

Indoor soccer began in Montevideo, Uruguay in 1930.  It was first used in YMCA programs, but international competitions developed.  In 1965, Paraguay won the first South American Cup championship
